You’ve got a business or business plan and now want to name your site. Choosing your website domain name is a major decision which could play an important part in the future of your venture. The success, or otherwise, of your business is often influenced by the name you choose for it. It is vital to do your research and find something original and memorable that immediately tells people what your company is all about.
When you name your business, think about the words that people are likely to type into a search engine if they are looking for the sort of products or services you are selling. What words would you use? If possible, you need to find a domain name that includes those words. This will help to get your website found and noticed by your prospective customers.
For example, if your website is about training dogs, dogtraining.com would be the perfect name but, unsurprisingly, some bright spark has already taken it. You could try adding a prefix or suffix e.g. bestdogtraining.com or dogtrainingcenter.com. Ideally, when buying a domain name, you want to try and find a name that is short which will stick in the minds of your visitors so that they can more easily recall it should they wish to return to your site or recommend it to their friends.
Try to avoid very long domain names (although it’s not always possible) and names that are not really a word. Pfjzht.com is certainly unique and might very well be available to register but how will anybody be able to say it and what would it tell anyone about the products or services you offer?
The best TLD (top level domain) extension to use is.com. People have become so accustomed to it that they often type keywords and automatically follow them with.com when looking for a website on their search subject. It is also seen as the most credible option for a business. However, if a plumber or builder, for instance, had a business based in the UK, then the country level domain.co.uk extension would normally be the best choice and this same reasoning would be applied to any regional business.
Having said that, if your business is international, if you are selling information products or have an affiliate site, then.com is probably the best way to go.
Although popular opinion is that the best one and two word domain names are taken and that there are no great names left, this is just not true. If a suitable domain name is not available to register, rather than settle for one that is not quite what you want, you may be able to buy an expired or deleted domain name that would be appropriate. If you would like to do a search for one of these just go to deleteddomains.com.
You may also find your ideal name, or something similar, can be purchased from the registered owner or a reseller of premium domain names.
This will cost more than registering a new domain but will pay huge dividends in the future and give a much greater return on investment than a cheaper, available domain name that doesn’t accurately reflect your business.
If you do choose a domain name that has been used before be sure to check that it hasn’t been blacklisted or banned as this can cause a lot of problems when you try to get your new website indexed with the search engines. You can carry out a check at selfseo.com and use their Google ban check tool.
Picking the right domain name
How do domain names work?
Say i find a domain name and it isn’t taken, it looks like most are about £9.99 which looks like an annual cost, what rights do i have to the domain name? what happens if i forget to pay a year, who does the name go to?
How do host sites work, were do host sites by there space from, if you get what i mean?
Easy when you know how hey…..
Domain names are the web address pretty much, its what people see and what directs them to your content.
With rights you have the rights to that name and no one else can use it besides you as long as you paid your fees.
If you forgot to pay it goes back into the registry and anyone can buy it at that point. But most of the times the company you registered it with will send you like 500 emails before that happens.
Hosting is where you store all your information for your website. So when someone types in your domain it connects with your host and then the servers tell the computer connecting what to display.
Its pretty much storage for your site.
Host sites get there space from servers they own, they manage them and pretty much anytime you go on a website your pretty much connecting to a server.
Theres plenty of free hosting a website builders out there for un-experienced people and is a great way to get started into web design.
